Following the steps of his famous father
Ishak Bey, Isa Bey also built numerous monumental buildings in Skopje, among
which the caravanserai Kapan An is one of the most magnificent buildings
of the second half of the 15th century with its grandeur and harmonious
architectural design.
The caravanserai is built with carved stone blocks and rows of brick joined with mortar. The ground floor and upper floor rooms face a spacious rectangular yard in the middle with a fountain made of stone. The function of the caravanserai was the same as that of other caravanserais in Skopje. It served as a safe warehouse for various goods of local and foreign traders, as well as comfortable rooms accommodating people and special stables for cattle. During the disastrous earthquake of 1963, the caravanserai was heavily damaged. It was restored and today has a more modern purpose in the field of tourism. |
